Sheesh! ???

Of course you do not have to hack the Wiki engine. Just place the WikiWord that is not a WikiWord ;) in square brackets [like this].

If you need more help with PhpWiki, mail me at [email protected]. I use the very same engine.

I think WakkaWiki allows you to post comments on each page (http://www.wakkawiki.com). It's a great idea, provided people use the comments for what they are intended: further and improve the contents of the page rather than ask questions.

PhpWiki got subpages and "blogs" allowing comments to be posted. Take a look at the docs, Solar can tell you more about it as he has got it up and running on our site.

It's as easy as adding

<?plugin WikiBlog ?>

to the end of the page. Such comments will be locked so that only an admin can edit them; this can be fixed with a two-line patch to lib/plugin/WikiBlog.php.

Again, if you need help with or have questions about PhpWiki, just drop me a mail.

Don't know either, I started right away with 1.3.3. Don't fear the "experimental" label on the 1.3 branch; I am now running a version pulled right out of their CVS, and stability isn't an issue.
