Bochs + floppy image

Post by petasaurius »

I have a new problem (:)):
This is what I have to do to test my OS in Bochs:
Write the boot loader on the floppy (GRUB or whatever), copy my kernel to the floppy and then create an image on that floppy (that's really slow!) and then I can test it in Bochs, I don't want to do it like this :/
Do you know how I could fix this?

you need to edit the bochs config file, or make a config file of your own. the file (on a windows machine) must have a line similar to:
floppya: 1_44=a:, status=inserted
on a linux machine, just change the a: to the appropriate path to the floppy device. then it should use the actual disk rather than an image file.

You could also set up a "floppyless" environment, which definitely speeds up your development... check out this thread.
Every good solution is obvious once you've found it.
