Hi all!
I've been away quite a time because I needed to learn C. Whilest searching, I've found some more difficult things that needed an answer.
* Do you need to learn ANSI C or another type of C?
* Linux or Windows, what is the best OS to develop one? (I currently use Mandrake 9 with it's tools)
Thanks for your help!
Which C (ANSI, Common, ...) do you have to learn?

ANSI (actually ISO) C is the One True C. Anything else which looks similar isn't C.SNeKKe wrote:Do you need to learn ANSI C or

Whichever you prefer and find more productive. I like Windows 2000 myself. Don't force yourself to use one or the other because others tell you that you should use it.Linux or Windows, what is the best OS to develop one? (I currently use Mandrake 9 with it's tools)

the only thing you might consider selecting your programming environment is the availability of your target object files (COFF for windows -- this one is simpler, ELF for linux -- this one is natively supported by GRUB). Elf under windows is feasible, but requires some configurations (see DF's posts, that's what he seems to use). Coff under linux has not been tried, afaik.

I use Windows 2000. Its an excellent environment to work in, once you resolve the elf binaries issue.
Personally I use cygwin (with gnu tools compiled for elf target), Context editor and bochs 2.0/VMWare for testing. XVI32 is my disassembler.
Not to start a flamewar, but what is it with people using these alternative OS's eh, never understand it myself
And ANSI C is the way to go too.
Daryl.

ANSI C - with no questions anyway and always. only after you'v got it you may try to use C++ and so on.
OS.. hm. QNX4/6 == native POSIX, transparent networking, flexible IPC and so on. win2k as a terminal on qnx's server.
but tastes differ of course.
