Hey Mr_Spam

Bochs is basically an IA32 and now x86-64 emulator. What this means is you can run you os within windows or linux which makes OS testing much quicker and easier as you don't have to keep rebooting.

BOCHS on linux is super fast and less buggy. BOCHS on Windows is the most crashy, slow, emulator i've seen.

Weird, my tests showed just the opposite.
Could Somebody please post their Setup Script for Bochs 2, i can't get it to work. So could somebody please post their script - so i can see how it works!
Sure...

Code: Select all

# how much memory the emulated machine will have
megs: 16

# filename of ROM images
romimage: file=../BIOS-bochs-latest, address=0xf0000
vgaromimage: ../VGABIOS-elpin-2.40

# what disk images will be used
floppya: 1_44=1.44, status=inserted

# choose the boot disk.
boot: a

log: bochsout.txt
mouse: enabled=0

ips: 500000

You forgot this needed part I found out:

floppy_bootsig_check: disabled=1

That is 100% needed in most cases.

Does Bochs still require you to make floppy images or can I finally use the floppy drive properly!

Real floppy drive is usable. Just say bochs that your floppy file is /dev/fdX

Does that work in Windows with using A:

Don't know, I'm not a window$ user

Yes, Bochs 2.0 provides real cdrom/floppy access on windows. You still can't use a partition as a harddrive though (Well you can, but it takes more effort than is worthwhile just to screw up a perfectly good partition ;)).

That better not be needed, if you need that, then you OS won't boot on some systems.

The nutty thing (BOCHS) I already have a bootsig...BOCHS people told me that my bootsig is in the wrong addr...hmmm it is!(isn't it?)

The BOCHS bootsig checking works absolutely fine with every bootsector I've dumped on there. It's your code, not the emulator. Make sure you haven't got the AA and 55 in the wrong order (Little vs Big endian drives me nuts as well sometimes).

Is AMD little or big endian? And what is pentium? little or big?

Intel and clones are all little-endian. It's just something to keep in mind if you start adding bytes into specific areas of your code (Like the boot sector ID).
