AFAIK Ext3 is just Ext2 with journaling capabilities....

Yes, most definitely. Virtually all the work of the last few years went into the journalling file systems. Ext2 is somewhat like FAT32 - yes it's been around for ages and everybody can do it, but NTFS still beats the crap out of it.I thought Ext2 was the default file system for Linux, it'll probably be the most maintained one anyway...
