PIC's, IDT's, ISR's, IRQ's, IVT -- still confusing

I've read many of the tutorials, looked in the intell manuals, and looked at some source. I'm still confused how all these relate to each other, perictularly the PIC's.
and then the structure of the IDT in asm is confusing me still. any help is greatly apreciated.
thanks,
Mr Spam

Hi Mr_Spam, I think you should be a little bit more specific on your question, what exactly are you not understanding? I cannot see a question in your post and I think nobody can see it. Good luck...

How do the PIC's relate to the interrupts, why and how do the PIC's get programmed?
thanks,

I did a search on the word "PIC" on this very site and I quickly found this page:
http://www.mega-tokyo.com/os/os-faq-pics.html

thanks!! what needs to be done first, remaping the PIC's or initializing the IDT or does it matter?

As long as you don't enable the interrupts (using sti) before both of those steps are done, I don't think it matter... However I for one loads the IDT when I load the GDT (just before entering protected mode)...

Hello!
When learning a new programming language you normally start with a "Hello World"-Program. It's the same with OS-Programming. The first versions of your OS should simply print a text on screen. When you have such an OS (running in P-Mode and able to print text on screen) you can think about PIC and IDT.
OS-Programming is mainly searching for informations about (very strange) hardware. So make a new subfolder in your browsers bookmarks and save in it every URL about OS-Development. A few very important sites are:
- Of course this Forum (it's the best one)
-
http://www.mega-tokyo.com/os/os-faq.html
-
http://my.execpc.com/~geezer/osd/
-
http://www.nondot.org/sabre/os/articles
There you will find informations about the IDT and the PIC (beside other very useful informations)
I don't know if you already started developing an OS or if you only planning to write one.

I'd also recommend keeping a book or two n the bookshelf: tanenbaum: operating systems design and implementation 2; burgess: mmurtl; Indispensable hardware book ... to name some of them.
ad PIC & idt:
It is up to you which of the two you init first, but both should be ready, BEFORE you enable interrupts again.
stay safe

Yes,
Operating Systems: Design and Implementation (Tanenbaum) is really cool. It gives you a overview about OS Development (e.g. about scheduling algorithms)

okay, so tannenbaum book is fine, and you have plenty of fine book in the sticky "book" thread. Could we remain on-topic ?
