redhat linux?

i was wondering about linux distrobutions, how do they set up a second extended file system?
you can do it in two ways
1) create a partition and set its type to 0x82 or 0x83 one is linux native, the other is linux swap
2) install a linux distribution like redhat, debian, slackware, etc
either way you have to fdisk a new partition and a newfs
