In what context?

As far as new kernel design, I've never heard of an alpha kernel, but I could see it being taken in two other contexts.

I kernel in a "far from finished" state; ie, alpha software.  Before beta version software, in other words.

Or, a kernel designed for DEC Alpha's.

Other than that, it's prob'ly just some buzz-word produced by a new OS design (no doubt a spin off of micro or mono-kernel designs)

Hmm... searching google yeilded this:

The Alpha real-time distributed OS kernel [Northcutt 87, Clark et al. 92] arose as the first systems effort of the Archons Project at Carnegie-Mellon University Computer Science Department.

That's all I found.  A search on the Archons Project might yeild more info.

A alpha kernel is a kernel in the stage before BETA. Beta is before the full version...beta is the "testing" stage. Alpha is the stage where it's in extreme development...and very unsuitable for testing.

FritzOS, for example, is in the "alpha" stage, and so is the Clicker32 project.
