Where to begin?

Hi, I had a go at OS dev sometime last year, made a mess and then formatted without backing up (didnt mean 2).
Id like to have another go, but because i thought i made a mess last time, can anyone offer any advice as to where to begin and what order it should be done in. And possibly point me in the direction of some places where i can learn to write my >>OWN<< OS parts and not borrow from linux or whatever.

Thankyou.

Perhaps you'd be interested in Sphinx? I'm also a newbie, and I find the language very portable. I even aim at pmode in it, it works quite good.

Start from where you want :) perhaps try writing at first a real mode shell launching programs from the diskette, and then try yourself at pmode.

Good luck,

well, it's been bout 3 months since i started osdevin and i can tell u one thing
find text, tutorials, articles on anything and everything u can. Plan ur journey well, be mentally eady e.g.:i want an OS that will eventually have a GUI and its own FS and efficient memory mang. (stuff like that). Geta piece of paper out and write down all ur ideas. then tackle eachone one at a time. I did it in this order:

1.bootloader that displays "HELLO"

2.btldr that laods REALLY simple kernel that says "Hello, World!"

3.btldr that sets up GDT,null IDT,Pmode and loads into kernel with simple putc() + print()

4.remapped PIC and added interrupt support

5. comand line interpreter

6.Now i'm working on MM + floppy driver

stuff like that. Just plan well, and it'll come tohether well. BTW, if u ever need help come to me @ irc.wyldryde.net @ #osdev , k?

regards,
Mr. Xsism
