IDT with simple calls?

an IDT is just for designing interrupts for your OS calls right? You don't need an IDT to make procedures that run in your own kernel do you? ex: just creating an outc function using int 10h and then calling it from c code, linking the codes together and running the kernel? I can't get it to call ANY interrupt, even BIOS ones without it causing the computer to reboot? If anybody can help, that would be great, thanx

I'm pretty much a complete newbie myself, but from what I've read..BIOS interrupts (like 10h) are not available once you switch into protected mode. You need to recode them all yourself and define them in the IDT.

I'm not even in pmode, to be perfectly honest, I can't figure out how to get INTO p-mode.. :-/ It would help if I had some C or NASM code showing how to get into p-mode, with nothing else, not dealing with MSDOS or anything... that explained every step Oh well. Thanx for the help.
