bochs - bochs.sourceforge.net
vmware - www.vmware.com

There are others, simics for example, if you have a student position and have access to a student email account then you can have simics for free for non commercial use. And it is the better of the emulators because it gives information about the registers timeing etc. Detailed information that could be very useful. But for the best of pc emulation bochs will do.

You need it on a filesystem of somesort.
I tried putting it on a bootable floppy disk booted by Grub, but Bochs didn't like the floppy drive. The easiest way is to get an image of a bootable floppy and boot the image of your hard disk. i.e. change the floppy settings
something like
floppya img=a.img

boot: a

I think thats right, check the documentation on the bochs site.
Use say rawrite to get the image off the floppy disk and into a file.
