What do you expect, paying cash?

Kinda, given that that's how we pay for gas. Where the vandalism problem is easily solved by an attendant.

Cash doesn't need an attendant (vending machines are a thing) and gas pumps often accept cards, which has solved the problem of "pre authorize then take what you need".
