I guess few people really know this (it was a very long time ago); but my very first attempt at writing an OS was
extremely bad. I don't just mean "bad" (nobody ever writes a good OS their first time); I mean completely crippled, idiotic, dodgy and stupid in a highly embarrassing way. Fortunately (after getting Internet access - it really was a very long time ago) people helped me learn more and learn faster, and so I improved quickly. My second OS was much better (still bad, but not extremely bad). It wasn't until my third or fourth OS that I started doing something decent.
Of course if I annoyed the people that were trying to help me, or ignored them, or insulted them; then it would've taken me a lot longer before I started writing a "not bad" OS.
Do you think there's anything that you could do to maximise the rate that your skills improve?
Cheers,
Brendan
