Hi everyone,

I'm new to OS development, and I'm at the stage to choose a file system to use. Thanks to the wiki page beginner's filesystems, I've found one that's particularly very suitable for my needs. It's fairly easy to implement and had a nice tool to create images. But yesterday suddenly this FS/Z page disappeared from the wiki.

Does anybody know why?

Thankfully the information is still available on github, along with the C header file and the tool, but still I'm curious what had happened.

Thanks

It's dissappearance has likely to do with how FS/Z came to be. The entire story can be found in this thread (viewtopic.php?f=1&t=32246), but admittedly it is rather long.

The TL;DR comes down to this: the file system was designed by someone from these forums, and had some (depending on your interpretation) fairly severe issues. The subsequent discussion derailed rather spectacularly, resulting in a (temporary, not sure here) ban of the original poster. My guess is (this isn't backed up by information in the aforementioned thread) is that somebody has since decided that the FS/Z file system was, given the issues, not worth having on the wiki, hence it's removal.

That said, it also means that FS/Z might not be the best choice for a first file system. If you do decide to use it, make a decision on solid arguments beyond just the advertised intent of the original author. In particular, it might be useful to at least understand where the criticisms given in the thread above come from, even if you don't agree with them.

Wiki pages don't disappear without notice. That said, some respected members of this board do not think that it is a good file system (I can't comment on it myself, but the arguments made seem pretty solid to me). Also, I don't think it would pass any noticability requirements (if there were any), not even by a long shot.

If you want to start a file system, I'd recommend choosing ext2 as your first. It is a widely supported, well-understood file system with fairly sane practices. That way you won't ruin your VFS from the get-go.

I know exactly why.

The page itself was questionable at best (not teaching how to design a file system, not documenting a well know/existing file system, and mostly only existing for "self promotion" purposes). It should've been in your user pages, but originally it was just a "minor misplacement" and not really worth worrying too much about.

Then you got banned, then you tried to evade the ban by creating more accounts and got banned some more. Then you persisted, kept creating new accounts and kept editing the wiki page; so all of that got banned too (and your personal wiki page for your personal file system removed).

Now you're lying about who you are and pretending to be someone else in an attempt to create the illusion that the wiki page was relevant to someone other than yourself. Of course, this only leads to more bans.

Cheers,

Brendan
