There's probably a lot of people already at the OSDev IRC channel.

I know that you just need to do something like install Pidgin, use the default FreeNode server, add an IRC user name, and enter the #osdev channel.

I made a video showing how to do that some time ago:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dw9ya68HacI

But it seems that the newest users don't go to the IRC channel too often. Maybe that could speed up things in general more than just with the forum given that it's a chat and thus the fastest communication media.

I mainly wonder about the newest users, maybe most people come from IRC itself, but I think that making clear that an OSDev channel exists and that it would benefit the development environment to have everyone from the forum to IRC, is something that I had to do so they actually use it.

irc protocol is lame, and you cant discuss serious topics on it. its effectively died a decade ago.

It looks like a normal text chat with Pidgin, and apparently the only chat OSDev has. At least all conversations are permanently stored and a link provided every time one enters the #osdev channel, and also links to books, the forum, the wiki and other stuff.

the forum does the purpose for me properly. chatting with random geeks were fun in the 2000s for me, but my life is not about this any more. i had a lot of professional connections from chats back then, but there were none that actually provided me anything, or there were no what actually gave me any gain. I OBVIOUSLY not talking about any specific osdev irc channels, just in general. the most people i met on irc actually had very big ego, but below avarage skills, zero social life. they were not that type of person who you would allow your house. seeing a person who have the same hobby, interest, or job not necessary will make him to be your friend, this is particularly true on irc. frustrated geeks are not the type of people i want in my private life.

By the way it's not very nice to attach remote image in your signature. It triggers my security nerve. If you need online status, you can use the builtin one from account setting.

Hi,

Curiously, when I joined #osdev about two years ago, there were less than 300 users. Now there are more than 350 users, so it's apparently not dying. Also, I don't see how a communication protocol being "lame" prevents serious discussions.

I however agree people on IRC (and mailing lists and here in the forums) are often harsh and impolite, but it's mostly too hard to "see" the feelings of the other through the Internet. I usually try my best to be nice (and sorry for the tutorial criticism, Geri, but it really bothers me when someone posts incorrect information and bad advice especially in a tutorial).

Regards,
glauxosdever

glauxosdever: when i mentioned the general behaviour of general irc people, i didnt exactly tought of ,,tutorial critism''.
for example once i made a deal to help somebody to code some feature in opengl, in exchange of a code snippet for DOF effect, which he had. i finished helping him to implement the code - it was like hours of work - and then i asked him for the dof effect, he told me to **** off and he asked the administrator to ban me. this is generally 95% of the irc people - people with no skills, big ego, maffia-friendships to harm you. once i was banned from somewhere just becouse the moderator decided to ban all east inventedeuropeans, becouse they ,,didnt invented anything'' especially hungarians who ,,didnt invented anything besides the hydrogen bomb'' :'D but every people i picked up from irc, had some kind of serious mental illness, and i ended up deleting and cutting all connection with them. there are much better platforms to pick up normal people, irc imho a waste of time.

IRC isn't well suited for code snippets and screenshots. I personally prefer Discord as my IM service. I've made OSDev server here BTW, join if you want: https://discord.gg/aJPTY8Y
No rules except for being on topic, being loyal to newbies and not being too rude or offensive (I allow you to make racist/rude jokes as long as people are OK with it. If someone's offended please stop that. Don't call black people n*ggers on purpose, as an example. It's extremely offensive and will probably make you hated by one who was offended with your inappropriate joke.)
