Hi

I thought it would be a good idea if there was a single thread that had the hardware that people use to test their operating systems. Then if someone is trying to test a driver or kernel of their os on a particular type of hardware, they can just lookup here if anyone has that piece of hardware (I mean to test that it works on more than just their own part on their own machine) and then, if possible , get them to test it.

If you think it's a good idea, then reply to this with your specs, otherwise don't bother.

I agree it's a good idea. Points of interest aside from specs might be availability of an internet connection (with method), harddisk-writability etc.

My boxes (and yes, I will have internet there by friday so I can actually do something :)) :

Gabriel:
AMD 486clone-100mhz
32M ram
540 (or actually, 504) MB harddisk, write allowed (will make cd backup of harddisk). Full harddisk access also allowed (come on with those pre-beta hdd drivers :D)
4x cdrom drive
3com etherlink III network card, connected to SIS900 on Michael
S3 Virge something (will check someday which, expect a dx)
floppy drive (with a bunch of disks naturally)

Rafael:
Intel(afaik) P133
16M ram
4.3 billion bytes harddisk (4GB), write in special 500M partition, can be remkfs'd to anything Slackware supports or you can make.
Some other 3com network card, this one is PCI, don't know what type.
Has soundcard, Creative Vibra16, no speakers connected, 2 surplus sets available (so don't mind blowing up a set).
floppy drive (same disks)
This one has an S3 Trio 64V+
Has got a PIIX chipset, PIIX3 or 4, think 4, with harddisk doing udma, so you can test that here too.

Michael:
This is my work box, the 40G harddisk will not be in the system when testing, I hate to see people overwriting my working-OSes. It has a 40G and an 8G harddisk, 8G fully available for testing. Has 256MB ram, DDR SDRAM, and all the goodies that you could want
Onboard networkcard (SIS900 connected to gabriel, occasionally hickups), onboard soundcard (SIS7012, no speakers), 2x usb with SIS OHCI implementation, PS/2 wireless mouse, some cheap @$$ keyboard, parallel printer connected, USB webcam (logitech sold under different name), USB networkcard (some type, just got it yesterday, works in Win2k), rtl8139 network card connected to rafael, SIS 6326 4m video card, and a SB live Player 5.1 with 5.1 set connected through analog output, microphone with headset connected with 2.0 out and mic in. Also has a cdrom player and a dvd-burner. Can be used for burn-tests provided that you ship me some dvd's or cd's to spend. I'm willing to throw in a few if you're reasonably certain it works.

Sparcstation 4 with 1 1GB scsi harddisk, think 50mhz sparc processor, 32-bit. Cannot run intel programs, unbelievably incompatible. Runs NetBSD, can be used for client-server testing.

Sparcstation 5, 1GB + 2GB scsi harddisks, 170MHz Sparc, 32-bit. Cannot run intel programs, can run servers. Has 10mbit ethernet connection, can be used for any sort of file or bit serving function.

Default setup for netbooting, netbooted kernels are easier for me to test (and can almost be tested with a webinterface, it's that easy).

-> The usb network card has gone (still have it around but it's not in use), it now has a Radeon 9200SE video card, the microphone broke (so it's not available), got a new USB keyboard, a new mouse that's atm also PS2 wireless but that can also do USB (Logitech MX1000). Add to the last box a cd rewriter that can be used with cdr's and cdrw's (if you can give me some hope of it working). Should be "default" type, but it gives problems with old cdrecords. MSI8332 afaik. Also has a DVD player and a number of sample DVD's that you can testrun. Can't make new dvd's for people to test their dvd disk access though.

From the box o' stuff that I'm never going to use again: One serial mouse with 3 buttons, one crappy ps2 mouse with a scroll wheel. One broken 40GB Maxtor harddisk that still can function but gives loads of errors (might be a good idea for testing? :)).

idefix:
toshiba satellite 1700-300 laptop. Has biig troubles with vesa bios calls - its just not present. Have to code a hardware driver for its ati rage 128 mobility graphics interface. It is a test machine.

I can also offer testing for PPC Platform OS's:
I have a MAcIntosh PPC 7100-80 HPV with G3 400 MHZ upgrade card. This one is a NUBUS based PPC.

Further, a Sparc Station4 hangs around in my shelves. Oh, yes, I have a hankering for such old machines. Even the good old C64 is present in my collection of Hardware.

All the computers in my LAN are connected via switch and share a broadband internet connection via some small router/firewall device. In former times, asterix 's been the internet gateway too.

This PC is quite weird.. will get it working asap:

- a Cyrix 486? 80 mhz.
- 4 mb memory with a vga card (1 mb)


Testing machine (HP Vectra!):

- Intel Celeron 333mhz
- 32 mb ram
- 800mb hdd
- 16x cd player
- 4mb ati radio 3d card
- 3,5" fd


Router:

- Intel Pentium 1 133 mhz
- 1.2 GB hd.
- 48 mb memory
- VESA 1.2 compatible video card with 1 MB of memory (it's an S3 Trio 64)
- a 1,44" fd
- a 52x cdrom player
- 3 NICs: a 3c90x (10 mbit!), 3c509 and a rtl8139.

The PCs are connected to my router. So if someone wants to test the TCP/IP stack, be my guest. No DHCP support is required. Internet down/up: 1536/256. The router is not a testing machine. However, I can change the network cards for your OS. (if you ask nicely :P)

Need another sparc testbed?

I've got a Sun Ultra30. That's quite a piece of hardware, if you know something about the sparcs. *gg* It is currently running Gentoo linux with joy and routes tcp/ip packets from Inet to Lan and vice-versa. :-))

Of these the work machine and computers O, P and Q have OS's installed (Win98 and/or Redhat Linux), and I'd need to be sure the OS being tested doesn't mess up hard drive data (especially the work machine as it holds accountancy data for my business and all my source code).

There's an 8-way 10/100 ethernet switch. Currently it's plugged into the work machine and computers P, Q, N, H and O. There may be a few other computers plugged in, but it's hard to tell without installing OS's on them (you wouldn't believe the mess of cables that's behind this lot).

Because I've got a limited amount of space, not all of the computers have monitors, keyboards, etc. I have a 2-way PS/2 keyboard, video, PS/2 mouse switch connected to the work computer and computer P. There's a 4-way PS/2 keyboard, video, serial mouse switch connecting computers N, G, D, H and O. Other computers are plugged in when needed. Computers Q and N have thier own keyboard, monitors and mouses. There's also a 12-way PS/2 keyboard, video, serial mouse switch but I don't have the cables for it yet (sooner or later it'll be used for the remaining computers).

I've also got a pile of parts and could mix & match where necessary. There's 4 "shells" (case, motherboard and CPU) that I haven't bothered with yet as they're similar to other computers (I'm trying for a wide variety of CPUs). In addition I've got a fully working/configured pentium 166 (not listed) that I'm doing up to sell, and a Commodore 64 :-)

I currently don't have any laptops, computers with hyper-threading, multi-CPU AMD computers (e.g. NUMA opteron) or anything that supports 64 bit. I also don't have as many SMP computers as I'd like (especially lacking quad, 8 way and older 80486/pentium). These are the areas future purchases will target.
