"the Intel Core i5-750 has 196 transistors"

Post by azblue »

Today I stumbled upon this trainwreck:

https://www.icrfq.net/how-many-transist ... enerations

How on earth did they conclude an i5 has 196 transistors?

Well, first they added the L1 and L2 cache (and completely left out L3 for some reason?). Then they arbitrarily divided by 8 (and steathily divided by 1024 by dropping the "KB"). Then they arbitrarily added 1. Then they multiplied by 4 (not arbitrarily, but because there are "4 bytes per instruction"). Then their formula said to divide by 4 (again, arbitrarily) but they left that out. Thus their final transistor count was 196.

They also briefly attempt to teach us some binary. For example, 1110000 = 128. yup. Looks right to me.

Some other, uh, shall we say, interesting perspectives include:
"Each transistor allows the CPU to access up to 4 bytes of data at once."
and
"A CPU usually has 32 bytes of instruction space"

This was all too funny not to share.

I've never read anything as stupid as what's stated in that link.
Comparing transistors in different CPUs

Let’s have a look at the number of transistors in different CPUs.

-How many transistors are in i3?

i3 has 3,072 transistors.
How many transistors are in i5?

i5 has 14,336 transistors.
How many transistors are in Ryzen 5?

Ryzen 5 has 29,047 transistors.
How many transistors are in i7?

i7 has 57,344 transistors.
How many transistors are in i9?

i9 has 104,560 transistors.
How many transistors are in a 64-bit chip?

There are 1,281,000,000 transistors in a 64-bit chip.
And the punchline is great also:
If you want to buy transistors for CPUs, consider contacting ICRFQ.
I'd love to know how I can add more transistors to my CPU...

Bwahaha! I missed that!

I did see they sell electronics... I wouldn't trust ANY bit of technology from any company that would put out something so stupid!

It's quite impressive how every single part of the article has something that's so wrong it's hard to even describe what's wrong with it.

I enjoy the MS Paint diagram explaining how the ports, RAM and hard drive connect to the MotherBoard (containing the processor or "CHIP" and the ROM) via the BUS.
