YaBB SE vs. XMB?

Is it worth switching my XMB board over to YaBB? I really like this board but....XMB is similar on the exterior. I imagine I will eventually start learning PHP enough for the interior to matter. So, what is the difference? (please dumb your answers down for me ;D)

YaBBSE is much faster than XMB(I have run tests). Trust me, the move to YaBBSE is probably one of the best things you can do if you are an XMB user(they really have a HORRIBLE query count in their board... lot's of us php/mysql developers where shocked at how many there was(which makes the board slow)).

I don't know all the differences... but from what I see they have taken all downloads of XMB down, because it has errors and doesn't work with the newest versions of php(so they are having to rewrite their code).

kewl. Thanks Chris. My new webhost just kind of sets that one up for you, luckily it can be changed. Is it easy to set up? I guess I will find out soon.

Well if you have safe mode turned off in php... it is VERY easy to set up. I could set up a YaBBSE board in less than a minute.

I have a bad feeling about this... ::)

I'm getting errors that I don't think I should be getting. Can I turn off safe mode somehow? I just emailed my webhost and asked them.

By the way, do you know where I can get the file "phpinfo.php"? If not, I will just post on the YaBB forum...the link to it in the help file is dead.

edit: YAY! I got it working. I had to create a SQL database and they had me use version 1.3 :-\ Hopefully they will update their PHP version soon.

Hey Chris, any PHP book recommendations? Something from the ground up. Maybe something that explains a little about MySQL as well. Mainly just how to write PHP though. >:D

Both of these sites have manuals(the official manuals) which contain everything you will ever need or want to know.

The mysql manual is a pain in the butt to use/learn but the php manual is the best manual you can find for php(it teaches every command as well as tells you everythign you might want to know about php).

They even have a downloadable chm form of the manual for download as well.

awesome ;D Thanks for all the PHP help and advice Chris. I think I'm really going to enjoy using this stuff. Eventually I would like to convert my entire webpage to PHP. It would be nice to be able to update content on my site without ever FTPing to it. Filling out private forms on the web for news updates, rotating images, and all the other stuff that I don't even know about yet.
