I used FreeBSD for a bit. I quite liked the base system, it was much more sensibly arranged than anything I'd ever seen in Linux, but above that it was just-about the same. A sysadmin friend said "FreeBSD is Linux for grown-ups." It really is.
As for Apple, if there's a certain something wrong with your brain, then the careless chaos of traditional Microsoft interfaces will be an absolute nightmare to deal with, and Windows classic style (Win95 look) will also seriously abuse your ability to concentrate. IMO, this is where rabid Apple fans come from.

I've had mostly good experiences with my old iBook and my one Hackintosh, except with OS X 10.3 which crashed constantly on the iBook. Oh and Apple using updates to inflict severe slowness when it's time to upgrade.
