Agreed, I still remember the reactions because of you changing avatar, after when I changed avatar, and before I changed avatar and people kept confusing me with someone else...

Its generally unsettling to see avatars change, especially the longer lasting ones. (I'm still getting used to Dex' totally out-of-place cartoongirl, and when was that?)

OK, I uploaded my avatar; a few thoughts
  • If I do change it, (and occasionally I do - they often get Christmas adornments, for example), I have to remember to change it here now as well
  • I have to make multiple versions - phpBB has obviously heard of GD or ImageMagick enough to read the image's size, but not enough to resize them. Gravatar, on the other hand, stores a large copy and scales it down to the site's preferred size.
  • phpBB apparently applies the URL filtering thats conventionally applied to linked avatar images (Such as file extension requirements) to URLs when it copies it's avatar from another site. This means I can't even just tell it to pull in the 80px Gravatar
If I'm honest, these are all niggles, and really I should address them to the phpBB forums. It seems like, while phpBB is improving, it's actually falling behind it's competitors; a few other parts of the interface feel similarly unpolished.

At least it doesn't have to be a polished turd, like its competitors.

Being a user of the MegaTokyo theme, it should be obvious that some people don't like the glamour that you "normies" seem to enjoy.

It's not glamour. I too sometimes enjoy simplicity; I've been known on occasion to set all of my desktop into the CDE theme. But polish is different - it's making the user interface nice to use.

And in some areas, phpBB is not very nice to use at all.

I agree, in the old days when anyone used Pype.Clicker avatars it unsettled me, but i started to think maybe my avatar was a bit aggressive looking, so put some mods backs up.

Now the cartoongirl may look out of place, but it as meaning, its the OS Tan for my OS, which i see as a mark of progress, as it was done independently from anyone in team DexOS

You know you're making progress when something you've created becomes the subject of internet meme. I guess congratulations are in order

(On the "out of place" note, I don't suppose blood covered mecha are either; heh)

*Headdesk*

Please read the following entry on values dissonance

TL;DR: Different cultures perceive things differently. Making statements such as the above is a matter of simple ignorance. Moe Anthropomorphism (as it is called) is common in Japan, and even used in advertising. For example, Microsoft Japan commissioned an official Windows 7 OS-tan. When cultures meet, this can of course result in the exchange of such things between cultures; Wikipe-tan is therefore the "official unofficial" mascot of Wikipedia.

I was going to make a joke about ASHLEY4, but that was much more hilarious. lol..

I think gravatar would be neat because I hate having to resize my avatar for every forum I use... I don't like the external image idea though... its also a bit of a privacy threat along with contributing to slower page loads...

You mean... {gasp}... you don't have a script for that?

Now, seriously. I haven't changed my Avatar anywhere for the last... uh... couple of years. You get over it. About the same time you stop customizing the look of your OS, because you realize there's more important things in life than a smooth-shaded window title bar. 8)

PS: That picture of me on the left is, like, nine years old? I don't live in that flat anymore, I don't own that laptop anymore, that T-Shirt has long since been washed into smithereens, and the project I've been working on at that time is dead & buried for years now...

We still own the couch I've been sitting on, though. ;-)

Perhaps not everyone is content with the same boring monotony every day. People change, and it makes sense that they would like to be able to update their online representation of themselves with as little hassle as possible.

I prefer to be creative in my posts, not the metadata appearing alongside it, which is basically a means to identify the author of a post at a glance. "Easily" changing that avatar defeats that purpose.
