I work as a kernel developer for BAE Systems. We've got an opening for a software engineer on the OS team. The official job posting can be found here:
http://www.baesystems.jobs/job-software-engineer-15993br#summary

The initial tasking would be a lot of user-space work; porting, updating, and maintaining a suite of open source applications. It would also transition into more kernel engineering as the new hire gets acquainted with our stuff. The OS we work on, called STOP, is a high-security OS built from the ground up in house. The kernel presents an ABI that is largely Linux compatible, so most of the applications we ship are common open source packages. We currently have over 300 packages that we need to maintain, and it's becoming a bit cumbersome for our small team to manage them all, so we're looking for some help.

There's also a never-ending list of things to be done in the kernel, so no matter where your interests lie, I can pretty much guarantee an interesting and challenging job. We're a pretty small team, so you'll get a chance to work on just about anything you want (within reason). We put a premium on security and correctness, so if you're committed to doing things right, familiar with secure coding practices, and can demonstrate common vulnerability exploitation and mitigation techniques, we'd love to hear from you.

The posting is for someone fairly junior, but all experience levels will be considered. I've been working on the OS for 5 years now, so I'd be happy to answer any questions about the job, the company, the products, etc... This is a non-contract position, so we're looking to hire immediately; it's not dependent on winning or keeping any contracts.

If you want to send me a resume, PM me and I'll send you my email address and my boss's so we can skip the corporate HR filter that seems to drop everything on the floor...

The job is still open; I'll post something here when the position has been filled.

We are also looking for some summer interns, so if you're interested, please let us know!

I should also clarify about the contract... The job is a standard opening, and the hire would sign a standard contract just as with the majority of jobs. What I meant was that, unlike many of the jobs in this area, the work we do is not dependent on us winning government contracts to stay in business. We are strictly a product group, so as long as we have customers, we keep working.

All open reqs have been filled. We'll consider making another slot, though, if you've got the right experience. Thanks for the interest!
