So that means that we cannot build a minimal boot environment using that code?
If I'm understanding this correctly, you can, but it will be based on legacy code which you should probably avoid.

When you start writing an OS you do the minimum possible to get the x86 processor in a usable state, then you try to get as far away from it as possible.
